Ultimate DJI Phantom 4 vs Phantom 4 Pro vs Mavic Pro Comparison

Earlier this year, DJI sent out an email to authorized dealers advising of their plans for the year ahead. Basically, the email stated DJI will be ceasing production of its Phantom 3 and Phantom 4 products to make way for a simpler and de-cluttered consumer focused lineup consisting of the Mavic Pro, Phantom 4 Pro and Phantom 4 Pro Plus. I have put together what I call the “Ultimate DJI Phantom vs Phantom 4 Pro vs Mavic Pro Comparison”.

DISCLAIMER!

Now, i the to make myself clear from the outset; this article is NOT a review to tell you which drone is better. The Phantom series and Mavic Pro are completely different drones designed for and marketed to two totally different audiences.

I stripped down the specs of the Phantom 4 Pro and Mavic Pro:

Comparing both on paper, the main advantages of the Phantom 4 Pro over the Mavic Pro:

  • It has a faster top speed (if that’s what you require)
  • It has a higher maximum altitude (6000m vs 5000m)
  • The P4P has a slightly longer battery life (a couple of minutes)
  • It has an infrared sensing system
  • The camera is the real advantage
  • It has more video resolution and frame rate options
  • It has more other options including H.265, up to 100Mbps
  • Dual band remote control operating frequency
  • The P4P is also USD$500 more expensive

The Mavic Pro packs some powerful punches:

  • It folds up to a very portable size (you can literally pack it into a small bag and won’t notice.
  • It weighs almost half of the P4P.
  • It keeps up with the Phantom in almost all consumer/hobby situations we can think of.

Its all well and good to compare specs on paper but let’s take a look at these two drones from a different perspective:

What is the single main problem that the Phantom 4 Pro and Mavic Pro solve?

Phantom 4 Pro:

  • Aerial video/Image quality

The Phantom 4 Pro’s camera packs a huuuge 1″ sensor that is capable of capturing 20 million pixels. This puts the P4P firmly into the “pro-sumer” range for content creators. The Mavic Pro has a 12 megapixel size camera which still gives off great looking images, but you (obviously) won’t get the same results that is expected in professional level productions.

Mavic Pro:

  • Portability

The Mavic Pro is an incredibly small powerhouse (well, drone). When folded up its only 83 x 83 x 198 mm meaning it almost disappears into your day pack/pocket/camera bag. Whether you’re on holidays and want amazing shots from different perspectives, or you’re a blogger than wants to add another dimension to your productions, you can’t go past the Mavic Pro’s incredibly small and very portable size.

However!

Even though the Phantom 4 Pro and Mavic Pro are DJI’s newest release, there is another option we have so far neglected…. the Phantom 4. Basically, the biggest differences between the Phantom 4 and Phantom 4 Pro lie in the camera and infrared sensing system (or lack thereof). The Phantom 4 Pro also comes with a downward vision system.

The camera specs of the Phantom 4 are almost identical to the Mavic Pro. But remember, production of the Phantom 4 has ceased.
